About this project
Argus
A beautifully designed read-only Reddit client. Available free on the iOS App Store.
The idea
I built Argus because I had been searching for a new Reddit client, ever since Apollo for Reddit was shut down. I wanted to build a Reddit client with the native feel of Apollo but without any concept of authenticated usage. With Argus you can browse all your subreddits and read all the comments, you just can’t vote or leave your own comments via the app.
Argus consumes Reddit’s public JSON endpoints and is able to return posts, comments, and media posts. Unlike other Reddit clients, there are no personalized algorithms or ads littering your experience. Argus is completely private and ad free.
Argus is named for the hundred-eyed watchman of Greek myth, who slept with half his eyes open. He only ever watched and never intervened. (He was basically the first Lurker.)
The app
On first launch, Argus opens on a small curated set of default subreddits. From there you can add subreddits by hand, import a CSV exported from another Argus install, or you can use the subreddit import tool to quickly populate the app with subscriptions from a real Reddit account.
The import opens Reddit’s own login page in a Safari web view. Once you’re signed in, Argus reads your subscription list and closes the sheet. Nothing about the session sticks around, and the app never holds your Reddit credentials. After that, your subreddits (and multireddits) appear in Argus. Your subreddits, saved posts, and settings live on the device and sync through your own iCloud.
Argus has two differentiating features that I haven’t seen in another Reddit client. It displays a reliability rating for around 5,300 news sources, pulled from public media-research datasets. For supported posts, a reliability gauge is displayed; tap it and a sheet opens with the reasoning behind the score. And on supported devices, a ‘Summarize’ button will provide a summary of the linked post as a bulleted list, all processed on device with Apple Intelligence.
Argus is free on the App Store.
